Amazon's search algorithm is built to sell, not to recommend. When you search "gift for 7-year-old who loves dinosaurs and hates loud toys," the algorithm doesn't actually process that nuance. It pattern-matches on "gift" and "7-year-old" and surfaces the highest-traffic results, which are dominated by paid placements and generic best-sellers.
The result is a fundamental mismatch: you have rich, specific knowledge about the person you're buying for, and the tool you're using ignores most of it.
What ScoutCurate Does Differently

Scout Mode: Built for Kids
Scout mode is specifically designed for finding gifts for children. When you describe a kid, Scout's AI applies a layered filter:
- Age-appropriateness — Development stage matters. A gift that's great for a 6-year-old might be boring for a 9-year-old or unsafe for a 4-year-old. Scout accounts for this.
- Safety filtering — No small parts for young kids, no fragile items, no materials that cause concern.
- Educational value without being boring — Scout prioritizes toys that build skills (STEM, creativity, social) while still being the kind of thing a child actually gets excited about.
- Dislikes weighting — If a kid hates loud toys, Scout deprioritizes anything noisy. If they're not into outdoor activities, Scout keeps results indoors. The "hates" information is as important as the "loves" information.
The person using Scout is always an adult — a parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or family friend — shopping on behalf of a child. Scout treats you like a smart adult who wants real recommendations, not a list of whatever Amazon is currently promoting.
Curate Mode: Built for Adults
Curate mode operates on a completely different logic. Adults are harder to shop for because they're more autonomous — they buy things they want when they want them. Generic recommendations fail because adults have developed tastes and strong opinions.
Curate's AI is tuned to think like a high-end personal shopper:
- Vibe-matching — "She has a minimalist aesthetic and works in tech" produces different results than "He's into outdoors and craft beer." Curate reads the aesthetic and matches it.
- Category specialization — Tech/Gadgets, Home/Kitchen, Beauty/Wellness, Fashion, and Books get dedicated sub-logic that surfaces items a serious enthusiast would actually want.
- The 'Pro Choice' reasoning — For each recommendation, Curate explains why this specific item fits the person. Not just "here's a coffee grinder" but "here's why this specific grinder matches what you described about their kitchen setup and how seriously they take their morning routine."
- Quality over quantity within price range — Curate won't recommend cheap versions of premium categories. If someone describes a person who appreciates quality, the suggestions reflect that.
Why Two Modes Instead of One?
The design decision to split Scout and Curate came directly from the reality that kids and adults require fundamentally different gift logic. A system prompt optimized for children's gifts (safety, age-appropriateness, educational value) is actively wrong when applied to adults. And adult gift logic (luxury, lifestyle-matching, "things they wouldn't buy themselves") is useless for a 6-year-old.
By building two distinct AI personas into the same extension, we can be genuinely good at both rather than mediocre at both.
